Samson was proud to play a role at this year’s Ryder Cup, golf’s premier international competition between the best players from the United States and Europe. Hosted at the iconic Bethpage Black Course at Bethpage State Park, Long Island, NY, the event brought together elite athletes, massive crowds, and a global broadcast audience—demanding world-class audio performance.

NBC Sports sound engineers relied on Samson’s Concert XD2 Two-Channel Digital Wireless Presenation System to capture the on-course soundscapes that bring viewers closer to the action. In a large-scale production environment where wireless frequencies are crowded, reliability is critical for a broadcast of this scale.

The sound engineers are always looking for new and innovative ways to capture the sights and sounds around the green, and this year was no exception. The initiative was led by Jay Carrie, a two-time Sports Emmy Award-winning sound engineer who has been part of NBC Sports for over 16 years.

Carrie explained, “For the past year we’ve been using these tiny wireless cameras in bunkers to give a unique perspective on a golfer hitting out of the sand. And up until now, we were running hundreds of feet of cable to cover the sound. I reached out to Samson to see what my options were. They suggested their Concert XD2 wireless system.”

To capture the authentic sounds of play, NBC Sports engineers waterproofed the CBXD2 Beltpack Digital Transmitters and strategically buried them in several golf bunkers—the sand traps near the green—to record the impact of each swing and shot.

Carrie continued, “It runs on an uncrowded 1.9 GHz signal, and at an event where thousands of people can be at any given place at any given time, we needed all the space we could get. We installed the receivers up high to ensure a line of sight. And the transmitter and lavaliers were buried in the grass and the sand and elements for three days.”

The resulting audio was broadcast as a part of NBC’s international feed, reaching over 200 countries and an estimated audience of 600 million households worldwide. This global reach highlights the Ryder Cup’s status as one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.

“I’d say we got up and down this week with the Samson Concert XD2,” Carrie concluded. “And I’m excited for all the future applications for this device too!”

Samson is proud to support NBC Sports in delivering innovative, high-quality audio for one of the world’s most celebrated sporting events. With the Concert XD2 systems performing flawlessly in one of the most challenging live broadcast environments, Samson looks forward to continued partnerships across the professional audio space.
